World Day for Safety and Health at Work – Mask on or mask off?

Face masks and respirators are recommended as part of personal protective equipment (PPE) as well as a public health measure to prevent the spread of covid-19 and prevent the spread of any airborne infectious germs.

Selection of Respirators and Filters

Selecting the right respirator or filter depends on the hazards or airborne contaminants, such as particles, gases, or vapours. In order to ensure a tight seal, it is important to choose a respirator or mask that fits the wearer’s face according to its size and design. By creating a seal between the user’s face and the respirator, inhaled air is forced through the filter material of the respirator and thus provides protection. Make sure the mask fits comfortably and snugly on your face, which will minimize gaps for air to escape, while still allowing you to breathe easily.

Purpose of Surgical face Masks

The purpose of surgical face masks, also known as medical masks, is to prevent contamination of sterile areas by large particles generated by workers (for example, to prevent the spread of spit and mucous). Blood, body fluids, excretions, secretions, and body fluids may also be prevented from entering the mouth and nose when wearing a surgical mask.

Purpose of Non-surgical Face Masks

Non-surgical face masks prevent larger droplets and smaller aerosol particles from spreading by capturing these particles as they exit our airways when we cough, sneeze, or talk. Non-surgical face masks are also used in countries during hay fever season to reduce the reactivity of the nose and reduce the symptoms of allergic rhinitis (hay fever) in those who are allergic to pollen.

In the global marketplace, there are many types of respirators and masks, and deciding whether or not workers need to wear either respirators, surgical masks, or non-surgical masks should be based on an analysis of their particular work environment and the protective properties of each type of PPE. It is not necessary that the respirators or masks with the highest efficiency should always be used.

GICG is ready to assist clients by providing the required testing services to assess the physical and protective properties of masks and respirators. We are also available to provide technical advice on selecting the right or most suitable mask/respirator for your unique needs.

Our laboratories and test are conducted in compliance with international standards and any other standards required by the local authority.
